Dig & dump
Dig & dump is the physical excavation and complete removal of Japanese knotweed infested soil from a site. It is the most disruptive and expensive knotweed remediation option and is generally regarded as the method of last resort.
Dig & dump for Japanese knotweed removal
The process involves excavating all soils that contain viable rhizome. These soils are loaded directly into lorries, typically 8-wheel vehicles with a 20-tonne payload, and transported to a licensed landfill facility for disposal as controlled waste.
However, the environmental impacts are significant. Dig & dump involves long-distance haulage, the use of valuable landfill space and the requirement to import large volumes of clean fill. The Environment Agency Code of Practice states that this option should be considered only when no suitable alternative is available.

Supervision to reduce volume and cost
Dig & dump is one of the most expensive knotweed remediation methods because all excavated material attracts Landfill Tax. With expert supervision, costs can often be reduced substantially.
A trained specialist can:
- identify the actual depth of the rhizome system
- determine the true lateral spread
- prevent unnecessary over-excavation
With accurate assessment, the volume of soil classified as knotweed infested can sometimes be reduced by up to 50 percent, lowering haulage and disposal costs.
Insurance-backed guarantees
All dig & dump projects can be supported by an insurance-backed guarantee for up to ten years. These guarantees are underwritten by an AA- rated insurer and are widely accepted by mortgage lenders and financial institutions.
A better alternative: Xtract™
For an environmentally responsible and often far more economical option, our patented Xtract™ method offers rapid on-site remediation without the need for landfill disposal. Xtract™ can clear sites in a matter of days at up to half the cost of dig & dump, and is also supported by insurance-backed guarantees.
