Stockpile & treat (bund method)
What is stockpile & treat?
Stockpile & treat is used where knotweed-infested soils lie within areas that need to be built on early in the programme. The method involves:
- Excavating soils containing viable rhizome from construction-critical zones
- Moving these soils to a designated non-critical area
- Laying out the stockpile, ideally in layers no deeper than 500 mm
- Encouraging regrowth from the rhizome, which is then treated with herbicides
Throughout the process, strict controls are put in place to prevent the movement or spread of knotweed material to otherwise clean areas of the site.

How effective is the stockpile & treat method?
Stockpile & treat can be a highly economical option, but it has specific suitability requirements.
- It is ideal for large development sites with ample space for the stockpile
- The treated material should remain on site unless it is consigned off site as potentially knotweed infested
- If the stockpile is made deeper to save space, herbicide treatment is prolonged and may require more than two growing seasons
For sites without the necessary space or where faster remediation is required, alternative methods such as Xtract™ may be a better fit.
