Wallingford, Oxfordshire

Project Overview

Our client in Wallingford contacted our team to survey a dwarf bamboo variety that had established growth in the rear of their garden and into the neighbouring properties, with the originating source unknown. The two properties wanted to have a removal conducted however, instructed two different companies.

Works undertaken: January 2026

Area affected: 20m2 including runners

Challenge

At first glance, on the initial survey carried out by our consultant, the bamboo appeared confined to the boundary, but closer inspection revealed a much more complicated problem. The dwarf bamboo had woven itself through surrounding plants and structures, meaning that the typical mechanical excavation method was not possible and works required careful planning.

Rhizomes had threaded their way into the wooden sleepers that formed the garden steps, turning what should have been a simple feature into a hidden pathway for bamboo spread. From there, the bamboo had pushed out two metres into the lawn and crept along the edge of the low retaining wall, taking advantage of every joint and weakness available. Due to these conditions, the stand could not be tackled in isolation; each garden feature it had infiltrated needed to be addressed to prevent fragments being left behind and the bamboo returning.

Solution

The manual excavation of the bamboo was carried out in a structured and progressive manner, beginning at the upper boundary and working through the garden while carefully tracking the bamboo’s underground spread. As layers were stripped back, rhizomes were found beneath planting, membranes, sleepers, walls and paved areas, requiring local dismantling of garden features to allow proper access and thorough removal.

The team followed the bamboo, ensuring affected materials were removed and all waste taken off site. As the full extent of the stand became apparent, the works extended beyond the original scope; however, the team remained on site and brought in additional resource to complete the removal successfully, at no extra cost to the client.

Outcome

The comprehensive approach resulted in the bamboo being completely removed, significantly reducing the risk of regrowth within the garden. Once works were complete, the affected areas were left level, clean and ready for reinstatement. The client was extremely pleased with both the final condition of the garden and the commitment shown to completing the job thoroughly, giving them confidence and peace of mind that the bamboo problem had been resolved properly, and with a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee.

What our client had to say

Great service from Environet from the initial contact and survey to the three days of excavation work. Gavin and his team were punctual, courteous and extremely hard working. The bamboo infestation covered nearly a quarter of our garden. Despite difficult terrain with various border levels (and very mixed weather!), they carried out a thorough job of removing rhizomes. Patio slabs were lifted to check for growth towards the house and rockery stones etc were removed and retained as requested for future landscaping. Sadly, many mature plants had to go, but having a bamboo free site is a great relief. The garden was left in a tidy and clean state, and the 10 year guarantee including monitoring visits is very reassuring. Thanks again to Gavin and the team for a most professional job. Patricia, Feefo.
