Patent granted in Canada for Xtract™ for removing Japanese knotweed

Xtract machine for Japanese knotweed removal

We are pleased to announce that our patent application in Canada has been granted.

Our Xtract™ machine, developed in 2008, now has patents in the UK, USA and Canada, and a patent pending in Europe.

Xtract™ was developed in the UK to facilitate knotweed removal on commercial and development sites as an alternative to Dig & Dump. Dig & Dump results in vast quantities of knotweed infested soil being consigned to landfill , hence is described as the method of last resort in the Environment Agency’s Code of Practice as it’s contrary to the waste objectives laid out in the Waste Directive.

Environet developed Xtract™ as a more eco-friendly solution. The machine has been designed specifically for separating and removing Japanese knotweed rhizome from knotweed infested soils. The third version was launched late last year, with some design improvements. Caterpillar tracks for better manoeuvrability on site, its own power pack consisting of an in built diesel engine plus hydraulic operation of conveyors and screening parts were added.

Compared to Dig & Dump, the Xtract™ process is the best environmental option, no herbicides are used and zero waste is consigned to landfill. As the processed clean soil is reused on site, there is no need to import clean fill, which provides the client with further cost savings. Xtract™ is typically half the cost of Dig & Dump and can be completed in a matter of days, depending of course on the size of the knotweed infestation and the weather!

All work completed using the Xtract™ technology is offered with our insurance backed guarantees, which are underwritten by an A-rated insurer.

Since the first version was launched in 2008, Xtract™ has been used on 100’s of development sites across the UK, and has been featured on the BBC and in the CIOB programme entitled ‘Building Tomorrow’.
