Altrincham, Greater Manchester

Project Overview

Our client in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, contacted our team to survey extensive bamboo growth between their garden and the neighbouring two properties. Having been planted decades ago, the bamboo had since spread across the boundaries of the properties and down a steep bank, as well as progressing laterally through an adjacent neighbour’s property.

Works undertaken: November 2025

Area affected: 13m2 including runners (plus 14m2 across two neighbouring properties)

Challenge

The bamboo was established on a steep slope, extending around the neighbour’s retaining wall and tree, and into the rear garden of the adjoining property at the base of a shed. The growth was heavily intertwined with dense vegetation, making the area particularly difficult to access and work within. At the time of the works, the bamboo had not extended into the client’s lawn but was spreading laterally and downslope.

Solution

To limit further spread and reduce the risk of damage, our team carried out excavating the bamboo within the client’s property and one adjoining garden. Access to the neighbouring property to the rear was not granted, and bamboo growth remains present beyond the treated area of our client’s property.

Access was established via the side of our client’s property, with a temporary ramp installed to allow machinery movement. Above-ground bamboo was cut back before mechanically excavating root balls and lateral rhizome runners from accessible areas. Due to the steep slope and access constraints, remaining bamboo growth was removed by hand and whilst ensuring the structural integrity of the slope wasn’t compromised.

Outcome

Despite boundary uncertainty and the challenges with neighbouring bamboo growth not being included in the excavation, a practical solution was agreed and successfully delivered. The proportion of bamboo within the client’s boundary was removed, and a root barrier was installed to protect the client’s property.

Due to steep ground conditions, the barrier was positioned slightly within the client’s boundary to maintain stability and preserve existing screening. All accessible areas were checked for rhizome, with isolated runners removed, significantly reducing the risk of future encroachment.

Responsibility for remaining bamboo beyond the barrier now clearly rests with the neighbouring property, providing our client with long-term protection and peace of mind.

What a client had to say

The site was not easy and neighbours unhelpful. Staff in all departments were understanding and helpful whenever difficulties arose.. Alistair Budden was particularly helpful. Trusted customer, Feefo.
