Excavation for Japanese knotweed removal

Excavation is the fastest and most reliable way to remove Japanese knotweed from areas where the ground will be disturbed. By physically removing soils containing viable rhizome, excavation allows construction, landscaping and development work to proceed without the delays associated with herbicide treatment.

A wide range of excavation-based methods are available to suit both commercial and residential sites.

When excavation is used

Excavation is typically chosen where:

  • development work cannot be delayed
  • ground disturbance will interrupt herbicide treatment
  • immediate removal of viable rhizome is required
  • contaminated soils must be handled quickly and safely
  • on-site or off-site disposal routes are available
  • site layout or access limits other options

Excavation can also be combined with supporting techniques such as soil screening or root barriers.

Commercial and development methods

  • Xtract™ – Patented zero-waste solution that separates viable rhizome from soil, allowing clean soils to be re-used on site.
  • Stockpile and treat – Excavated soils are relocated to a non-critical area, laid in thin layers and treated with herbicide.
  • Cell burial – Infested soils are placed in a root-barrier-lined pit, sealed to form a containment cell.
  • Dig and dump – Complete removal of knotweed-infested soils to licensed landfill. Generally used as a last resort.
  • Screening – Mechanical separation of rhizome from soil to reduce disposal volumes and costs.
  • Residential excavation methods

Residential sites often require smaller-scale solutions that balance speed, cost and minimal disruption. Two dedicated methods are available:
    • DART™ – A dual-action residential method combining targeted crown and rhizome removal with structured herbicide treatment.
    • Resi-Dig-Out™ – A rapid residential excavation method that removes all viable rhizome in a matter of days. Ideal for extensions, landscaping and cases where previous treatments have failed.
These methods are designed specifically for residential gardens and small plots where access and disruption must be carefully managed.

    • suitable at any time of year
    • compatible with protective measures such as root barriers
    • supported by site supervision for safe implementation

Integrating excavation with wider knotweed strategies

Excavation is often part of a broader management plan. For example:

The most appropriate method depends on site size, layout, access, programme requirements and budget.
