Xtract™ zero-waste removal

Xtract™ is Environet’s patented, rapid and reliable method for removing Japanese knotweed from construction and development sites. By separating and extracting only the viable rhizome, Xtract™ eliminates the need to send large volumes of soil to landfill, delivering major cost savings and creating a truly zero-waste remediation process.

Our goal is simple: remove all viable rhizome to prevent future regrowth, while retaining as much clean soil on site as possible. This protects project budgets, reduces environmental impact and keeps sites on programme.

Benefits of Xtract™

  • Removes knotweed in a matter of days, keeping construction schedules on track
  • Designed specifically to isolate and remove knotweed rhizome from infested soils; no rhizome means no regrowth
  • Environmentally responsible solution that avoids importing clean fill and eliminates haulage or disposal of contaminated soil
  • Patented technology developed in the UK
  • Typical savings of up to 50 percent compared with conventional excavation and disposal methods
  • As an on-site remediation technique, Xtract™ may qualify for Land Remediation Tax Relief, offering further financial benefits

In some cases, site constraints or soil conditions may limit the practical or economic use of Xtract™. Where this occurs, our aim is to minimise the volume of material that must be removed off site and consigned to landfill.

How the Xtract™ process works

We use different Xtract™ technologies depending on the scale of contamination and site conditions such as access and ground type.
  1. Excavation Infested soils are excavated using a 360° tracked excavator under the supervision of a knotweed specialist. Only soils containing viable rhizome are removed, ensuring accuracy without unnecessary over-excavation.
  2. Screening and separation The excavated material is processed through the Xtract™ machine, where our patented system screens the soil and separates out the Japanese knotweed rhizome. This isolates the viable plant material while preserving the clean soil.
  3. Re-use of clean soil The processed soil is ready for immediate re-use on site. These soils must remain on the site of origin; if they are transported elsewhere, waste legislation applies and the material must be classified as knotweed infested.
